The International School on Quantum Electronics “Laser Physics and Applications” is a traditional event, organized biennially by the Institute of Electronics since 1976, which includes in its topics investigations of the basic physical phenomena, processes of interaction of laser radiation with different materials and new scientific results obtained in the research areas of quantum electronics and optics, as well as the technological practical applications of new ideas, devices, instruments and laser systems. Leading scientists are invited to deliver lectures on the fundamentals of laser physics and applications of lasers as well as the newest results in these research areas.

The topics include the following:

• Laser - matter interactions
• Laser spectroscopy and metrology
• Laser remote sensing and ecology
• Lasers in biology and medicine
• Laser systems and nonlinear optics

The conference is devoted to the 50th anniversary of the laser discovery.
The purpose of ISWLA’10 is to extend the knowledge level of the attendees regarding the most recent results in laser physics, the new projects supported by EU, the development of pan- European ELI project - Extreme Light Infrastructure - delivering a pulse of 200 PW.

ICO   officers   Maria  Calvo   and   Gert   von   Bally   congratulate   Photonics   Europe  grant  winners

Researchers Marembo Claver Karemara of Rwanda and Artsrun Martirosyan, Institute for Physical Research, Armenia, winners of the International Commission for Optics (ICO) travel sponsorship for SPIE Photonics Europe in Brussels 12-16 April, were congratulated at the meeting by ICO President Maria Calvo, Univ. Complutense de Madrid, and Associate Secretary Gert von Bally, Westfälische Wilhelms-Univ. Münster.

Martirosyan presented a paper at Photonics Europe on “Radiation of difference frequencies at optical rectification of spatially limited femtosecond laser pulse in the periodically-poled GaAs crystal.”

Chapter members Narine Gevorgyan and Robert Sargsyan participated in the Winter College on Optics and Energy which was organized by the International Commission for Optics (ICO), the Optical Society of America (OSA), the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE), the European Optical Society (EOS), the Società Italiana di Ottica e Fotonica (SIOF), the US National Academy of Science (NAS), the Photonics Society (IEEE) and the Central European Initiative (CEI).

The Winter College exposed the participants to a broad range of topics related to the applications of optics and photonics for energy production and saving. Important physics aspects involved in solar energy conversion, like optical properties of materials and structures for light harvesting will be addressed, followed by more applied issues of optical devices design and technology. The scientific programme consisted of lectures by international experts, internal seminars and group discussions, some laboratory demonstrations.

Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, JINR, Dubna, Russia

Member of our chapter Henrikh Baghramyan participated in the VIII  Winter School on Theoretical Physics which was organized by Bogoliubov Laboratory of Theoretical Physics, JINR, in collaboration with Theoretical physics chair of Dubna University in the framework of the program DIAS-TH.

The programme of the School intended for the last year undergraduate students, PhD students and young researchers. Five lectures were scheduled per day. The students had an opportunity to make short reports about their research at the seminars.
