YSU and NAS SPIE Annual school start

Another interesting initiative of our chapter is Annual school on optics. This year hopefully we will give start to a good tradition, which will help students and schoolchildren in better understanding of Optics and Photonics. First event is devoted to Lasers. in collaboration with Student Scientific Society of Faculty of Physics of YSU we will have several short lectures on Laser development history, basics and applications and also our professors will share their experimental experience on working with lasers, and participants will be able to take part in Laser resonator adjustment, in optics lab. The program will include

4. Laser irradiation control

Laser Physics 2011

October 11 - 14, 2011

Institute for Physical Research of NAS of Armenia

Scientists from several countries participated to this conference, to share their scientific successes with their colleagues. One of honored guests of conference was Nobel Prize winner Zhores Alferov, who shared many good memories with participants about creation of Institute of Physical Research and told details from history of creation of hetero-structures in semiconductors, a work for which he was awarded with a Nobel Prize.

Our chapter is continuing a good tradition. A special YSU and NAS Student Chapter prize for the Best student contribution to the conference was founded in 2010 to support and encourage young scientists for their scientific achievements. This prize is awarded by decision of International Program committee to a student who represented his work on conference. On Laser Physics 2011 two prizes were awarded.

We should also point out organizational activity of members of YSU and NAS SPIE student chapter who were enrolled in Local Organizational Committee.

More than 200 leading scientists in the field of Liquid Crystals from all over the world attended this conference. The first day of the conference was tutorial on basics of Liquid Crystals. The rest days of the conference new trends in OLC and successes were reported. The social event of the conference included excursion to museums in Yerevan and visit to Garni and Geghard.

International Symposium on

O P T I C S and its applications

5 - 9 September, 2011

In 5-9 of September an International Symposium on Optics and Its Application took place in Armenia. This was a unique event, which had a goal to gather Scientific and industrial centers of Armenia, working in the field of Optics in one place.

The organizers of this event were SPIE YSU and NAS student chapter, Institute for Physical Research of NAS RA, Russian-Armenian University, LT PYRKAL CJSC and Faculty of Physics of Yerevan State University.

The symposium was dedicated to the 5-th anniversary of SPIE YSU and NAS student chapter activity, It created a great opportunity for participants to acquaint with progress of science and the successes of Armenian optical industry. The talks were held in the mentioned centers and were accompanied with lab tours, and in the last day of symposium an exhibition of optical production of Armenian companies was organized.

More than 150 scientists from 15 countries of the world attended the conference.

The scientific works represented during a conference will be published in the world famous Journal of Physics: Conference Series scientific journal, which is a great opportunity for scientists to inform about their research their colleagues.

The directors of the symposium were Director of IPR of NAS Prof. Aram Papoyan and the president of ICO Maria Luisa Calvo, and the organizers were young scientists from IPR and YSU Narine Gevorgyan, Tigran Dadalyan, Artsrun MArtirosyan, Paytsar Mantashyan and Karen Vardanyan. Prof. Katarina Svanberg the president of SPIE also held speech during symposium.

For support and Help during organization of the Sympozium, the organizers are expressing their gratitudes to the director of LT PYRKAL mr. Gagik Buniatyan, dean of faculty of Physics and Technique of RAU Prof. Hayk Sargsyan and the director of IPR Prof. Aram Papoyan.

In the welcome speech Prof Maria Calvo have announced that during an ICO jury meeting Armenia was elected as a member of ICO, which opens new opportunities and prospective for professionals.

During the Symposium was announced also that Prof. Maria Calvo was accepted as a honorable doctor of RAU.

For encouraging young scientists scientific work SPIE YSU and NAS chapter has funded a proze in the nomination of “BEST STUDENT CONTRIBUTION” for theoretical and experimental works. The winners were chosen by the members of Program committee.

Optics + Photonics 2011

200 students invaded San Diego this year to take part in the 10^th Annual Student Chapter Leadership Workshop at SPIE Optics + Photonics! The workshop began early on Saturday, 20 August at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.
Members from our chapter also participated to these events. They represented their scientific works at Optics + Photonics 11. During exhibition YSU and NAS SPIE student chapter activity was also represented. This year the first time our chapter participated to Outreach Olympics. The president of chapter Tigran Dadalyan demonstrated some simple experiments on optics, which are demonstrated during visits to schools and used to help understand teaching material (see video. http://spie.org/x51517.xml)

Three memebers from YSU and NAS SPIE student chapter, Diana Antonosyan, Lilit Hovhannsiyan, Tigran Dadalyan attended IONS 10 which took place in Southampton, England at 9-12 of August. During the conferences Prof. Chris Dainty (2011 OSA President, NUI Galway) and Prof. David Payne (University of Southampton) the director of ORC at university of Southampton held talks. Participants had lab tours to the ORC in University of Southampton and SPI lasers. Don Spalinger (Research and Innovation Services), Anatoly Grudinin, (Fianium) and Dr. David Parker (SPI Lasers) held panel talks. and shared with their expirience.
In 13-th of August participants had a trip to Portsmouth Historic Dockyards.

Workshop on Frontiers in Ultracold Fermi Gases

Chapter member Narine Gevorgyan participated in the Workshop on Frontiers in Ultracold Fermi Gases held at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy, 6-10 June, 2011.

This workshop aims to provide an overview of the recent progresses in the field of research of ultracold Fermi gases. This area attracted in the last years an increasing attention, also due to the impressive progresses in the experimental manipulation of such systems. It is foreseeable that in the near future of years new important results will be obtained, ranging from the study of Fermi gases in optical lattices to the use of ultracold fermions for simulating strongly correlated systems.
